The Prime Minister of Peru, Pedro Cateriano, has recently outlined the framework for the Choquequirao Cable Car Project in the main hall of the Congress, in Lima.

The ambitious project aims to build two transportation systems to improve accessibility and aid tourism:

  1. A cable car track starting from the adjoining Apurimac region
  2. A further track starting from the Cusco region

It is hoped that the development will be completed by 2022, and will unite two regions along the canyon, from the village of Kiuñalla, located in the Huanipaca district and that of Yanama in the district of Santa Teresa.

This will make the site accessible to a greater number of tourists, allowing many more people to reach this iconic location, and aid the recovery of the tourist industry in Cusco.

At present, tourists must take the 5-day Choquequirao Trek to reach the ruins of the ancient Incan city of Choquequirao.

In all this is a tough trek at altitude, although the stunning scenery and natural landscape make it more than worthwhile.

Although the route will still be challenging, the length of the walk will be reduced by a day by the new cable car.

The trip would be around 15 minutes in each direction, with a capacity of 400 people per hour.

With three stations distributed along the Canyon itself, it will have a total length of 3 miles.

The Peruvian government plans to spend around 260 million dollars on the upgrade to provide more inclusive and modern access to the sister site of Machu Picchu.

Larger than Machu Picchu, much of Choquequirao is still hidden amongst the jungle, making this an exciting trek for any keen explorers.

The site is said to be the last fortress inhabited by the Inca emperor during the Spanish invasion.

From an architectural perspective, it has the influence of the northern Chachapoyas style, and as a consequence, has a different look and feel in comparison with it’s more famous sister site.

It’ll be interesting to see how this project develops over the coming months!
